The concept of “MIDI Samples”
was invented by Keyfax in 1994 when designing the first of
the ‘Twiddly.Bits” collections.
A MIDI Sample captures the performance of a musician in MIDI,
using so-named ‘alternate MIDI controllers’ such
as MIDI guitar, MIDI drums, MIDI wind instrument etc.
By using the appropriate controller, played by the appropriate
musician, a MIDI Sample captures the authentic essence of
a musical performance (phrase, beat, or complete song), while
retaining the key flexibility that MIDI offers in terms of
sound, processing, tempo, and context.
Keyfax has developed unique skills both in MIDI recording
and post-production to ensure that maximum expression is captured
initially, and maximum flexibility is retained after.
Since 1994 Keyfax has conducted hundreds of MIDI recording
sessions using a wide variety of controllers including:
MIDI guitar
MIDI trigger drums
MIDI drum kits
MIDI drum pads
MIDI bass guitar
MIDI violin
MIDI accordion
MIDI wind instruments (sax style, trumpet style)
MIDI harp
MIDI keyboards
MIDI Samples form the basis of the Twiddly.Bits libraries,
collections of short musical phrases and beats for use in
MIDI composition applications.
MIDI Samples can also be used as the content foundation for
a wide range of proprietary formats. Keyfax data is or has
been used in a wide variety of applications including musical
instruments (Yamaha Motif series, Generalmusic Equinox), mood
libraries (Beatnik), software/hardware products (Creative
Labs, Digitech), and portable communication devices (Yamaha,
NEC).
