Preamps & DIs

Preamps and Direct Boxes (DIs) are essential for many recording applications, particularly Microphones, Guitars and Basses. You need a preamplifier to boost Hi-impedance (Hi-Z) signals (which are very low) to a useable line-level signal. Some preamps are totally clean and don't alter the sound characteristics at all, while others, such as nice tube preamps, impart their own desirable 'flavor' onto the signal. Just as with microphones, you will ultimately want several different preamps for different applications. DIs serve an additional function of duplicating signals and re-routing them. For example you could send a bass signal simultaneously to an amplifier and an interface to record the original dry signal for re-amping later.
